Favorite Movies of 2022-2023 School Year

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS⸺This school year was filled with the release of blockbuster movies that made the year what it was. From brand new favorites to the sequels of beloved movies in the past, these are the top 5 movies of the 2022-2023 school year according to the student body of FBHS.

 

5. Scream VI

 

Rated: R

In the sixth installment of the Scream horror franchise, four survivors of the Ghostface killings find a fresh start away from Woodsboro. However, when a new killer reveals themselves, the four must find a way to survive. The movie earned a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 76% and an audience rating of 91%. The movie features Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as the Carpenter sisters.

“It was scary but there was also plenty of comic relief. I’m not a movie theater person, but I enjoyed this one,” said sophomore Jazzi Parker.

 

4. Top Gun: Maverick

 

Rated: PG-13

In the second Top Gun movie, Tom Cruise returns as Maverick training a group of aviators for a special mission only fit for those willing to fly it. The movie earned a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 96% and an audience score of 99%. It stars Tom Cruise as Maverick.

“I like how action-packed it was but also bittersweet at the same time,” said freshman Danika Funk.

 

3. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

 

Rated: PG

In the second installment of the Puss in Boots movies, Puss in Boots discovers he has used eight of his nine lives and must find the Last Wish so he can restore all of them. The movie earned a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 95% and an audience rating of 95%. The movie stars Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek as Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws.

“The stylized animation and unique plot was really cool to see, not to mention the absolute icon that is Jack Horner,” said junior Regan Uhl.

 

2. The Super Mario Brothers Movie

 

Rated: PG

The only non-sequel on this list, Super Mario Bros takes second place. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie synopsis is “With help from Princess Peach, Mario gets ready to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world.”

The movie earned a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 59% and an audience score of 96%. The movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.

“I like how they added all of the old music to it and used a lot of the original stuff,” said sophomore Violet Valdez.

1. Avatar: Way of The Water 

 

Rated: PG-13

Taking first place, Avatar: Way of the Water, the second movie in the Avatar series, was awaited for 13 years. The movie had a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 76% and an Audience score of 92%. The movie features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. 

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure” (Rotten Tomatoes).

“I liked the storyline and how they continued the series. The dedication that they put into the graphics and effects was the best part,” said junior Addyson Lapp.
