With the regular season winding down, the volleyball team currently leads district with a 30-4 record.

In the team’s most recent game on Oct. 12, they defeated Tuloso-Midway, 3-0.

On Oct. 5, they faced Alice at home and cruised to a 3-0 victory. Sophomore Mackenzie Wiggins led the team with 12 kills, while sophomore Cali Nims tallied 22 assists. The team never trailed at any point during the three sets. Coach Kara Wallace explained how the team was able to stay in control from start to finish.

“We practice at a very high intensity so that when we play a game we’re ready for those types of situations,” Wallace said.

This is the last year for senior captain Hayle Campbell to suit up for the Hornets. Campbell has been a leader for this team all season long.

“I try to lead this team by cheering for them and setting a good example,” she said.

Campbell’s leadership has continued to be vital to the team’s success as the playoffs approach. She hopes to fulfill her goals as her final year comes to an end.

“I hope to do well in the playoffs and make the rest of this year the best because this is my last ride,” Campbell said.

The team’s record reflects how consistent they have been all year long, and players have been able to have success this season due to their ability to communicate well.

“Working hard and getting better at every practice, they are pushing themselves mentally and physically,” coach Kara Wallace said. “They have a lot of chemistry, and they want to work hard, and they want their teammates to do well.”

Wallace said that the team has been able to stay focused on the right things this season. On Oct. 19, the team will play its final regular season game when they travel to Laredo to take on Cigarroa.

“We take one game at a time, and we try to make sure that we are beating each team in sequence, and we don’t try to look too far ahead.”

Wallace and the team are also prepared for whomever they might face.

“We do some scouting, and then just seeing them in different tournaments, and we’ve played everybody one round already, so we know we have to adjust our offenses and defenses according to what they’ll do,” she said.
