After an eventful season, the softball team stepped off the field for the final time in 2018 as region quarterfinalists. The team finished the regular season 7-3 in district.

Their first round game against Harlandale on April 28 was a nailbiter. It was a slow start for the team as they gave up five runs in the first inning. Junior Molly Rhodes started the rally in the second inning with an RBI double. Stacia Krnavek continued the rally by driving in a run with a double. The game was a back and forth affair from there on out.

The team took an 8-5 lead into the seventh inning. Although they were down by a few runs, Harlandale would not go down quietly. They would push two runs across the plate, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Lady Hornets would hold on, 8-7.

In the second round, the team faced off against Mercedes. Game one went a total of 11 innings until the Lady Hornets eventually pulled away and won 8-7. The bats came alive in game 2 as junior Cydney De Leon belted a walk-off home run to 10-run rule Mercedes by a score of 15-5.

In the third round, the Hornets took on district foe Calallen in the region quarterfinals. The two defeats were heartbreaking as the team lost game one on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning after leading 5-4. The final score was 6-5. In game two, the Lady Hornets kept up with Calallen most of the game, but it wasn’t enough to stop them and their bat attack as they drove in two runs to end the Hornets run towards a state championship with a final of 5-3.

Four seniors on the Lady Hornets team are graduating this spring. Shortstop Riley Grunberg’s happens to be one of the four. She will be taking her softball talent to UT-San Antonio next spring. Her biggest strength was hitting the ball and she displayed her power by crushing nine home runs this season.

“I practice all the time, and it has improved over the years,” Grunberg said.

Senior Araya Ayala was also a big factor in the team’s success. She set a goal for herself coming into the season that would help improve her ability to contribute to the team.

“I wanted to have a positive attitude throughout adversity, and I would say I achieved that goal,” Ayala said.

Ayala will be furthering her softball career at San Jacinto College. Her teammates are what Ayala will miss the most about playing at Flour Bluff. She appreciates the things she has accomplished and the people she has played with during her tenure on the team.

“I’ll never get to play with the same group of girls, so I don’t take my experiences for granted,” Ayala said.
