The boy’s basketball team made a late-season push in order to make the playoffs, clinching a spot with a 17-15 (4-4) record after pulling off an 85-62 victory against Carroll at home on Feb. 9.

Senior Ty Burns led the way against the Tigers with 22 points. Their second district win came against Moody, where they were able to pull off a 77-69 victory at home on Jan. 9.

Senior Brendan Suckley broke down the team’s preparation leading up to their win.

“We came in with a good game plan and the coaches were talking to us throughout the week. We watched film and we executed,” he said.

The team fell to Veterans Memorial in their first matchup 41-67 on January 17. Coach Boswell had some takeaways from the game.

“We played well in the first half and kept it close until the midway through the third quarter,” Boswell said. “We just have to find ways to finish games out, especially against great teams like Vets.”

Boswell has been proud of the way his team has performed to this point in the season and he appreciates the fight they show every game.

“We’re pleasantly surprised that we’re still in the playoff hunt,” Boswell said. “Our win against Moody was big, and we just need to continue getting better every day.”

The team is still making adjustments and striving to improve as the season goes on.

“We need to keep working hard and keep their vision on the ultimate goal, which is to get ourselves into position to make the playoffs,” Boswell said.

According to Boswell, the seniors have done a good job leading the younger players. Senior captain Burns recognizes some of the areas in which the team can improve. The team’s strong suit is their shooting and their chemistry.

“We need to do a better job communicating on defense and improve our rebounding,” Burns said.

Burns hopes to be part of first team all-district and to help his team win.

“I’m just trying to play every game like it’s my last,” Burns said.

Boswell’s message to his players is simple.

“(I told them to) keep grinding and competing and you’ll see the big picture,” he said.
