Zach Graf is one of the 21 new high school teachers this year. He also happens to be a Flour Bluff alum.

He was a part of the Flour Bluff school district since he was in sixth grade and graduated in 2008. After he graduated, he went to Texas A&M University in College Station to get his bachelor’s in history and english, and then came back to Corpus and got his master’s at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This is his second year teaching. He taught Texas History at the junior high last year, and will be teaching world geography and world history this year.

During high school, he played football and baseball. He will be coaching football and girls soccer this year.

He also had some of the teachers that are still here, including Margaret Slaughter, Myriam Bell, Susan McConnell, Beth Huckabee and Coach Chris Steinbruck.

“They are a lot friendlier as colleagues than they were when I was a student,” Graf said. He added that he still calls them by their last name, even though he hasn’t been a student for nine years.

“It’s still Coach Steinbruck, it’s Mrs. Bell, Mrs. McConnell. Haven’t been able to break that one yet,” he said.

Graf also said he believes that being a teacher where he was previously a student will make him a better teacher.

“I remember being a student, sleeping in class too and not turning in my homework, so I can have sympathy with kids that do those kinds of things, and you try to do your best to make it interesting and have a little compassion for what’s going on in their lives, but ultimately you still gotta do the work.”
