With the rise of social media, high schoolers have found new ways to communicate by having Snapchat streaks with their friends.

Snapchat streaks happen when two people send snapchats to each other every day for at least three days.

After three days of snapping, the number three and the fire emoji will appear next to the friend’s name. For every additional day that users Snapchat each other, the number increases.

As long as both people snapchat each other within 24 hours, the streak stay alive.

Snapchat streaks have become increasingly important to many Snapchat users because they allow them to keep in contact with their friends. Many people also view snapchat streaks as an accomplishment.

“I think it’s the fact that you can say ‘I’ve talked to this person at least once a day, every day’ for however long your streak is,” junior Asher Whitmire said. “It can show that you value the person enough to keep talking to them for days, weeks, months and sometimes even years.”

Sometimes it’s not just the length of a streak that is an achievement, but the number of streaks.

Freshman Emily Clark has more than 60 snapchat streaks.

“I feel a responsibility to maintain an ongoing streak with numerous people,” Clark said. “Your friends count on you, and with 71 streaks, you don’t want to let them down.”

Even though keeping up with so many streaks seems challenging, it has become a habit for many students.

“It’s like a constant alarm; you can hit snooze but you know you have to do it sooner or later and if you avoid it altogether then you’ll lose something that you’ve worked a long time for,” Clark said.

In the end, Snap streaks are just another addictive form of social media. It’s a way for people to communicate and keep up with each other, whether they live down the street or in a different state.

“It’s important for people to be connected,” Witmire said. “Humans are naturally social animals and sometimes circumstances overtake the possibility to be with people, so snapchat helps with that.”
