Our generation was one of the first to grow up around video games, as well as computers. The creation of video games on the computer sparked a worldwide popularity in MMOs (massively multiplayer online games).

It was Nov. 24, 2005 when New Horizon launched a worldwide MMO which was later bought by Disney in 2007 and grew into an international penguin phenomenon.

The online game “Club Penguin” takes place on a frozen island where the players can decorate their igloos, go on adventures, and play minigames. The game’s popularity grew fast with over 30 million accounts in Oct. 2007 and over 200 million accounts by July 2013.

Players that make an account create a username and penguin, as well as an igloo for their penguins to live in. There is an optional paid membership service that allowed players to buy and unlock certain items for their penguins. Since the game is owned by Disney, many game accessories for the penguin included items from Marvel superheroes, Star Wars, and even Pirates of the Caribbean.

The growth in popularity led to a variety of franchise items including books, and Nintendo video games. New Horizon, the creators of the game, even used the gaming platform to collect donations. Players chose a cause to donate their in-game coins to and the company then divided real-world money among each cause based on the amount of in-game donations it had received. The company donated a total of $1 million to a variety of charities.

As the generation of the kids who grew up with “Club Penguin” grew older, its popularity began to decline.

The game first had to decrease the amount of international headquarters, starting with the closing of an office in Kelowna, British Columbia. This then lead to a British office closing down and employees in Los Angeles being let go. The trend of offices closing continued when the German and Russian sites of the game were shut down on Sept. 2, 2015. This is the final year for “Club Penguin” due to the announced discontinuation set for March 29.

“Club Penguin” online game is shutting down and leaving many in our generation saddened for its departure; however, it has been announced that there will be an app for the game titled “Club Penguin Island.” The launch of this app will be sometime in March 2017.

This will go down in history as the worst event to unfold in 2017. I am absolutely devastated but have not put Club penguin island down for more than a single second. My senior year will never be the same without club penguin, RIP.
